Compared to the United States, Canada is relatively peaceful when it comes to gun violence. However, this week, that tranquil feeling was shattered when a gunman opened fire at the National War Memorial in the capital city of Ottawa, killing one soldier. The gunman then entered the Parliament building a short distance away, firing his weapon repeatedly, going right past the room where the prime minister was speaking to lawmakers.
Two days earlier, another man, a convert to Islam who had recently become radicalized, ran over two Canadian soldiers with his car. One of them later died.
These events seem to have jolted Canadians out of their sense of security as terrorists struck at the very symbols of that security — the nation’s armed forces and the center of the government.
America, of course, is no stranger to such events. Just on Thursday, a man attacked four New York City police officers with a hatchet. On Friday, in Sacramento, CA, a man went on a shooting and carjacking spree that left two sheriff’s deputies dead. In recent years, we have also seen multiple shootings at U.S. military facilities — at the Navy Yard in Washington D.C., twice at Fort Hood in Texas, at Marine Corp Base Quantico in Virginia, and at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. It seems as though the very ones tasked with providing security for us are coming under attack themselves.
We place a lot of value on security. Americans spent $20.64 billion on home security systems in 2011, and according to research, the home security market is expected to grow to $34 billion a year by 2017. In fact, recently, I had a home security system installed at my home. Not only do we look for security from violent attack and burglary, but we spend billions on insurance for our homes, cars, and health. We may not like the insurance company, but we like the security — or perceived security — that they provide.
Despite our best intentions and diligent precautions, however, violent crimes still happen, devastating accidents still cost millions of dollars, fires and natural disasters cause costly damage to homes and property, and unforeseen health challenges cause many people to burn through whatever cushion their insurance company provides. It sometimes seems as though everything that we invest in security turns out to be useless, and it is just as good to simply not worry so much about security and just keep your fingers crossed so to speak and hope that nothing bad happens to you.
However, there is one thing that you do not want to simply cross your fingers about, and that is your eternal security. What is eternal security? Eternal security is knowing for sure that you are going to Heaven when you die and knowing that nothing that happens in life can prevent you from getting to that destination.
Perhaps, you are wondering if it is really possible to know for sure where you are going after you die. Yes, you can, if you place your faith and trust in Jesus Christ, God’s Son who died on the cross so that we can have the opportunity to go to Heaven.
Jesus Christ said of those who believe in Him in John 10:28-29, “I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”
John 3:15-16 says, “Whosoever believeth in him [Jesus Christ] should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Perhaps the most powerful argument for eternal security is found in Romans 8:38-39 which says, “Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
What is so great about this eternal security is that it is not dependent on anything you or any other human being does. It is totally dependent on God and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. Once you have this security, it cannot be taken away and God guarantees it.
Would you like to have this eternal security today? Would you like to know in your heart that no matter what happens in this life, you will spend eternity with God in Heaven?
If so, please understand that you are a sinner, just as I am, and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Because of our sins, we deserve eternal punishment in hell. Romans 6:23 says “the wages of sin is death…” This is both physical death and spiritual death in hell. Without this eternal security, we will spend eternity in this awful place of fire, pain, and judgment.
However, the good news is that God provided a way out for us. As explained in John 3:16, He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve on Himself. Three days after His death, He rose from the grave, demonstrating His power of sin, death and Hell. This resurrection also shows that He can deliver us from sin, death, and Hell as well.
If we want this deliverance, we must believe on Him in order to take advantage of the salvation and eternal security he offers. The Bible says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” The Bible also tells us in Romans 10:9 and 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you want to be saved right now, please pray a short prayer to let God know that you are making this all-important decision. Just repeat after me and mean it from your heart.
Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I realize that I deserve eternal punishment for my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today and forever so that I can have your peace and assurance about my life today and my eternal future. Amen.
