Judgmental: Jurors sided with Short after finding out that New Life Baptist Pastor Ed Wilson and wife Cindy, pictured, also had a son ‘out of wedlock’
A single woman who was fired from her job at a church daycare for getting pregnant out of wedlock settled a lawsuit against her former employer for an undisclosed amount.
Venita Short, 31, a Fayetteville, North Carolina, day care worker, had worked at the New Life Baptist Church’s preschool before she was fired for being pregnant and unwed.
But she was vindicated during testimony in a court which exposed a host of ‘sexual sin’ raged among staff – including the pastor who admitted that he too had a child out of wedlock in the 1980s.
What’s more, according to testimony presented at the trial, an assistant pastor, who is the son of the pastor of the church, had an affair with another church employee and was alleged to have hired prostitutes – and was suspended from his job but otherwise was never disciplined.
During emotional testimony, short described how she had been employed at the New Life Baptist Daycare and Preschool in Fayetteville for more than a year and a half, the Fayetteville Observer reports.
She described how she had received three pay raises and heaps of praise for her hard work.
But in 2012, after learning that she was pregnant she shared the news with Cindy Wilson – the wife of New Life Baptist church’s Pastor Ed Wilson – who told her that she had ‘sinned’ and ‘fornicated.’
Short said Cindy then asked her if she planned to marry the baby’s father before the baby was born.
When she said that she would remain single, she was fired from her job for becoming pregnant outside of marriage.
‘They told me I was fired because I am pregnant and I am not married,’ Short told ABC11.
So she filed a lawsuit.
Short lost the baby in 2012 shortly after being fired, according to the Observer.
